Loot Crate is a monthly subscription box costing $19.95 (US) a month which delivers assorted geekery and fandom goodies to its subscribers. It comes with an optional add-on of Lvl Up; giving further accessories for a separate payment.
Each month Loot Crate comes with a different theme. With a new year, comes new loot and with great loot comes great responsibility! January’s theme is Invasion.

Exclusive X-Files The Day Has Come T-Shirt
This month’s T-shirt has a design by competition winner Francis Minoza, but I’m actually more a fan of the second place design (See below). Sorry Francis! But the gooey green just isn’t doing it for me, even though it’s more obviously ‘X-Files’ on first glance. Which do you other Looter’s prefer?
I’m a big fan of Scully and Mulder’s Escapades, though like a lot of people I never got around to seeing the end. Those kind of things happened in the days of spotty dial-up internet. I can’t bring to mind my fave episode of the X-Files, there were far too many, but I can tell you the most terrifying one. It’s the one with the bugs that can get you in the darkness, little green, glowy bugs; sound familiar? This T-shirt is giving me mega flashback vibes, but not in a good way.
It’s still an X-files t-shirt, which is a good item no matter which way you slice it. (Please don’t take this as an invitation to cut up your tee. You don’t always have to ‘do you’.) I just feel like I would have preferred a less messy design. But hey, I’m just one person. Maybe everyone else loved it?

EXCLUSIVE Alien Facehugger Plush
This is actually a pretty cute, topical item. I feel like it’s almost a little too cute, so it’s time to heed Momma Lorna’s advice. When he scuttles up close to you and blinks those pretty little eyes at you. When you start to feel him move up your leg, don’t be fooled. Even if he bought dinner. You’re allowed to say no. Ok?
This thing came with a little yellow elastic for photo ops that almost no-one figured out until they read the magazine. It’s a nice piece of loot, but for me it’s an insta-sell as my cats will destroy that thing faster than you can say ‘mummy paid a lot of money for that you little s%$ts.’

Exclusive Space Invaders Vinyl Figure
I actually really love this figure! Even though I’m fast running out of space on almost every shelf I own (except my trophy shelf…) I have an unnatural love for figurines.
There are three different colors available for this little guy and despite somehow thinking I got the blue/pink, you can clearly see I got the green/blue variety. Which is the second best. Yellow just looks like a space invader whos power is dropping urine on your head.
….Which is actually a pretty terrifying though.

EXCLUSIVE The Fifth Element Prop Replica Multi Pass
Ok, so I know this item isn’t going to be a hit with everyone. I mean technically it’s almost useless, but I am crazy in love with it. I am a huuuuuuuge Fifth Element fan and I particularly love Leeloo (who doesn’t?). Besides, this will help enormously in my ironically fat Leeloo cosplay that I dream of someday being brave enough to do.
Loot rating: Five LORNAS out of five!
Exclusive ‘Invasion’ Mini Art Prints
For me, this is a huge win. I’m a big fan of art prints and it’s an item I don’t feel like we really get in Loot Crates. These have a nice firm card and will look great framed. While I’m not a huge fan of old movies, I know someone who is and these will make a wonderful gift. Throw on a dollar store frame and rock your geek chic to the max. (I was born in the 90’s ok.)
Loot rating: Five LORNAS out of five!
Exclusive X-Files LED flashlight
My least fave item in the Invasion crate. I feel like this is a bit of a copout, especially as an exclusive item. It’s probably hard to get X-Files merchandise (although…I remember it being a huge thing in the nineties) and I already own two flashlights so I’m probably bias. However, this item just bores me. I have no sense of adventure either, so I’m not likely to be hunting down aliens with it.
I do like that they included the batteries…but that’s really my only positive on this one.
Loot rating: One LORNA out of five!
As always, when receiving Loot Crate, subscribers are treated to some extra items. So here’s my ratings for this month’s box, badge and Loot Crate magazine:
Space Invaders themed box
Probably my favourite box so far. I feel like the color choices and style lend themselves perfectly to a vintage arcade machine feel. I still have the problem with the boxes in that I don’t really know what to do with them, but I at least felt a twinge of guilt throwing this one in the recycling bin and it made for a great photo background!
Box rating – Four LORNAS out of five –
Loot Crate Pin
Not only does the pin look absolutely smashing, you get an unlockable “DLC” with it. While I’m not a huge fan of the term “DLC” in an attempt to look “cool”
I do approve of getting stuff for free. This month’s offering is issue #1 of the Level 44 comic.
Loot Crate Invasion Magazine
Hot on the heels of their Pin/Badge victory, it seems like Loot Crate has answered my screechy complaining bird call about their magazine as well.
Not only is this month’s magazine better quality paper (something which apparently makes a difference to me), I actually read the whole thing. They have interesting interviews, a cute alien game and essentially just good content. Kudos.
Magazine and button Rating – Five LORNAS out of five
This crate wasn’t my absolute favorite, but it was chock-a-bloc full of exclusive items. I really appreciated the spread of loot giving us quite a few items that were different from the norm. More than anything. I’d say this crate was ‘fun’ and though money value wise, I feel there’s room for improvement, I really enjoyed it overall.
Subscribe to Loot Crate here to be in time for February’s as of yet unannounced crate.
