Ipsy is a monthly cosmetics subscription bag costing $14.95 (US) a month which delivers assorted make-up and beauty goodies based on your preferences and colouring to its subscribers. Each month Ipsy comes with a different theme, Ipsy’s April 2016 Glam bag theme is ‘Dreamers’!
Ipsy April 2016 Glam Bag (Turquoise and yellow Artsy Bag)
This is actually the opposite of last month’s, in that I wasn’t thrilled with the sneak peek, but it was much nicer in person. The colors are nice and punchy and look great together, which really saves this bag from looking like an emo teen’s photoshop project.
It’s a win for this bag!
Fleek-o-meter Rating: Nice.
Sample Size: Full size.
Approx cost: $30.00
Good brushes are hard to come by. No one knows that better than Luxie–which is why they set out to create the best tools in the biz. Their pro quality, fluffy brushes have earned a permanent place in our makeup kits (and hearts).
At the risk of sounding like an advert for the company, this is what make-up brushes should be like. All those months in which Ipsy sent me make-up brushes and I made a face…
it turns out all they needed was to send me an actual good brush.
From the little details, the cute design, the ‘dipped’ effect on the bristles and just the softness of the hairs it’s perfectly executed. Blends highlighter really well with no shedding.
It’s definitely a brush I can see myself using again and again. I much prefer the cute lilac design of this brush to all those other scrub brushes in past bags.
Fleek-o-meter Rating: No Scrub.
Sample Size: Full Size
Approx cost: $6.00
WHY WE ❤ THIS BRAND: Innovative 3-free polishes with all of the color and shine, none of the nasty chemicals. We call it mani magic.
WHY THIS PRODUCT IS FAB: Ultra-thin formula applies evenly for a seriously long-lasting mani.
I’d never heard of this brand before so I wasn’t really expecting much when I tried it out. Boy was I wrong! It went on perfectly, easily and nice and smooth on top of my base coat. Even before I applied my shiny top coat it was extremely glossy.
It dried super fast (I usually accidentally mark my nail polish before it’s dry, but with this one I didn’t). With one layer it has a lovely pinkish lilac sheen and two turns it more into a fuschia purple. Very impressed.
I can’t believe that this nail polish is so cheap! HOW IS IT POSSIBLE. MY BRAIN HURTS.
Fleek-o-meter Rating: So good it hurts.
Sample Size: Full Size.
Approx cost: $20.00
WHY WE ❤ THIS BRAND: When it comes to nailing trends, they’re always two steps ahead of the pack! We trust them to bring us the most fashion-forward, so-hot-right-now shades before anyone else.
WHY THIS PRODUCT IS FAB: It’s totally buildable, so you can take your look from a subtle sheen to an out-of-this-world glow. Plus, the ultra-blendable formula is totally foolproof – perfect for anyone from newbies to pros!
Unfortunately this was the big disappointment of April’s Ipsy bag for me. I’ve never used a highlighter before and was so excited to try it, I spent ages looking up tutorials and making sure I knew how to apply it properly. The name made me laugh out loud and I was so excited for ‘That Glo Tho’. Cue sad trombone music. Hating this product was like yelling at a baby lamb. Painful and unexpected.
The color is almost an orangey bronze, far too dark to be considered a ‘highlighter’ on my pale skin. The sparkles make it a great sparkle or glitter stick, but utterly destroy it as a highlighter. Using it on your cupids bow, chin, nose or forehead just make you look like you applied glitter powder. Which is great for a teenager, or contestant in this year’s annual Hunger Games pre-show pageant.
The only plus I can say for this is that it can still be used on the cheekbones for a nice shimmer, but overall highlighter it isn’t. I’d heard so many good things about Trust Fund Beauty, but this was a big flop for me.
Fleek-o-meter Rating: Katniss Over-done.
Sample Size: Full Size.
Approx cost: $16.00 ($8.00 each)
WHY WE ❤ THIS BRAND: Founded by a former actor and Power Ranger villain (seriously!), Jennifer Yen fused her grandmother’s Asian Beauty wisdom with modern philosophy. How’s that for kick** beauty?
WHY THIS PRODUCT IS FAB: Think of these sheet masks as your skincare storm troopers! Each individually wrapped sheet traps a powerful solution of Asian botanicals, seaweed, white tea and antioxidant rich Blue Lotus in your skin. The result? A plumper, more radiant complexion.
In terms of scent and moisturising effect, these masks were pretty standard, leaving my skin nice and soft and moisturised while providing a relaxing and cooling sensation during use. The Seaweed mask actually left a little bit of a burning sensation afterwards so I wouldn’t recommend that one for sensitive skin.
Where I found they differed from regular sheet masks is that rather than being soaked in liquid, they felt very slimy/almost gel like in consistency. This had both pros and cons.
Pro: You can wear the mask while sitting upright as it sticks to the face very well.
Con: It feels slimy and unpleasant after removing and there is too much gel to rub in well. I would consider using them again, but not my favourite.
Fleek-o-meter Rating: Purlisse improve these.
Tarte LipSurgence™ lip crème in wonder (Sample Size)
Sample Size: 1/2 size.
Approx cost: $14 CAD
WHY WE ❤ THIS BRAND: Eco-chic, cruelty-free products full of good-for-you ingredients.
WHY THIS PRODUCT IS FAB: The super creamy formula is infused with their famous maracuja oil to leave lips feeling oh-so soft. And we’re beyond obsessed with the soft poppy pink shade.
I’m in love with this lip creme. I didn’t expect to love it this much. The shape and size of the tip are perfect for applying on my lips, I can pop this on and it takes less than 3 seconds and comes out looking absolutely perfect.
The smell is a little minty, but strangely also a little musty, but once it’s on you can’t smell it at all, which is a definite plus. Color wise, the ‘Wonder’ shade is a lovely color that looks more pinky in the light and more of a dusky pinky red in the shadows.
Staying wise, it does come off very easily, but fades naturally and so doesn’t look weird as it absorbs throughout the day. I’m just a big fan of how easy this lip creme is to use (almost like a lip crayon) and how nice it looks on. Has a bit of a shine, but mostly matte. It also doesn’t leave my lips feeling dry.
It’s not perfect, but I love it because of the ease of using it compared to the awesome result you get!
Fleek-o-meter Rating: I’m Lovin’ it.
April’s bag was a dream to use (get it?!). Apart from the one product I didn’t like it and keep in mind – it was still a product I was excited to try – it was a great month. The value of the bag was insanely good, with mostly all full size products that were on the expensive side.
Probably one of my fave bags to date. Ipsy, you did good.
