Humble Monthly Bundle – November 2015 – Reveal and Rate

Humble Monthly Bundle – Did it deliver?

Humble Monthly Bundle is a new monthly service from awesome cheap game distributor Humble Bundle that features a selection of mystery games for a $12.99 price tag. Like many other gamers I was sceptical. Having been a buyer of the other Humble Bundles for under a year, I already had a Steam backlog of around four hundred games and wasn’t sure Humble could deliver on their promises of a good monthly bundle that I would like.

I was drawn in by the offer of a AAA game as I actually don’t have very many top tier titles on the PC yet and figured that Humble would give the best games in the first two months to draw Gamers in. Click on the cut to see if Humble Bundle was able to deliver or if it fell flat as predicted.

Saints Row IV

Humble Monthly Bundle - Saints Row IV - LoquaciousLorna

The US President must save the Earth from alien overlord Zinyak using an arsenal of superpowers and strange weapons in the wildest open world game ever. The epic conclusion to the game that changed all the rules!

This was the point my mood turned from cautious optimism to the beginnings of sadness. Saints Row IV, the triple A offering, was a slap in the face. It’s not that Saints Row IV is a bad game, quite the opposite. Having been sold on the title way back in Saints Row 2, I was certainly a fan. However if we look at this logically, Saints Row IV is a popular title, but it’s hardly new. In fact, it was released in August 2013; that’s a whole two and a bit years ago. Most serious PC gamers already own this one. Stacking on the disappointment is that it’s been featured in a Humble Bundle already, a mere eleven months ago.

Humble Monthly Bundle - Saints Row IV dance - Loquacious Lorna
It’s almost enough to make a person give up on dubstep altogether.

What really brings the house down with incoherent rage is the historical lowest price of the game. Because it’s on sale, right now, at the Humble Bundle store for the grand price of $3.74. Even then, the previous historical price was only one cent more, so it’s not like it hasn’t been available cheaply before. The DLC (handily not included in the monthly offer) is also on sale and the version featuring all the DLC and the game is under a fiver. This makes it seem like the AAA game selection was just a way to get us all to spend more money on the Humble store for the Downloadable content. That doesn’t just lower confidence in Humble Bundle as a whole, it feels downright skeazy.

Besiege

Humble Monthly Bundle - Besiege - LoquaciousLorna

Besiege is a physics based building game in which you construct medieval siege engines and lay waste to immense fortresses and peaceful hamlets. Build a machine which can crush windmills, wipe out battalions of brave soldiers and transport valuable resources, defending your creation against cannons, archers and whatever else the desperate enemies have at their disposal. Create a trundling behemoth, or take clumsily to the skies, and cause carnage in fully destructible environments. Ultimately, you must conquer every Kingdom by crippling their castles and killing their men and livestock, in as creative or clinical a manner as possible!

Again, I’m forced to concede that Besiege is a great game, but, and this is a HUGE but (Like Baby got Back big) this game was massively popular. Besides still being in Early Access this building Sim was so popular that legions of it’s creations, gifs and images were everywhere on Imgur and (presumably) Reddit. So it’s hard to believe that a large amount of PC Gamers don’t already own this. At least it’s a solid Indie Title, but another that has been on sale for a reasonably low price. Not yet bundled though, so there’s that.

Valkyria Chronicles

Humble Monthly Bundle - Valkyria Chronicles - LoquaciousLorna

Set in a fictitious continent reminiscent of the 1930s, Valkyria Chronicles depicts Europe divided in two and ruled by two super powers: the Empire and the Federation. The Empire has set its sights on invading a small neutral country called Gallia, situated in the middle of the two superpowers territories, in an attempt to secure invaluable natural resources. Within this struggle a hero named Welkin, and his fellow soldiers of the Federation’s 7th Platoon, are fighting back against the invasion and the Empires attempts to unify the continent under its power.

During the ensuing war the Federation discovers that the Empire possesses a secret weapon, known as the “Valkyria” – an ancient race with special powers thought to exist only in legends. With this new discovery the fate of the Federation’s ability to turn the tide of the war, and the hope for a better future, hang in the balance.

Another popular title, released around a year ago for PC. Probably not enough to save this awful bundle, but at least there’s slightly more chance that some people may not have played this one. For that reason alone this would be my pick for the highlight of the bundle so far. While I haven’t yet played this game, it’s definitely one that piqued my interest enough to purchase during a previous sale (Ironically enough on the Humble Store).

Lethal League

Humble Monthly Bundle - Lethal league - LoquaciousLorna

Lethal League is a competitive projectile fighting game where you have to hit an anti-gravity ball into the face of your opponent to win. The ball speeds up with every strike, up to explosively extreme velocities. Play intense local matches with friends and foes, challenge yourself in the singleplayer mode or battle it out online.

Haven’t heard of this game at all, but from the overwhelmingly positive Steam Ratings to the fact that it has a local co-op it’s one of the only saving graces of this bundle from the point of view of my personal collection. The graphics look bright and punchy, I could definitely get behind this. It also has a single player mode, (which I’d try) and a multiplayer online (which I wouldn’t). But it’s not really worth 12 dollars for me. More of a consolation prize to prevent Seppuku.

Sanctuary RPG: Black Edition

Humble Monthly Bundle Sanctuary RPG

Sanctuary RPG: Black Edition is the standalone expansion to last year’s Sanctuary RPG Classic. It brings forward a smattering of new features and improvements that completes the fusion of chic retro aesthetic with modern gameplay mechanics and game feel.

Another game that’s a mystery to me. I adore roguelikes, but don’t really rate the simplicity of the graphics here. It does have an ‘overhwelmingly positive’ score on Steam though and Indie titles often surprise with their terrible graphics, but amazing gameplay that draws the player in (See Undertale). There’s definitely a chance I’ll enjoy this one and it’s a relief to actually have more than one game from this Bundle that I can play.

Towerfall Ascension

Towerfall Ascension - Humble Monthly Bundle

TowerFall Ascension is the definitive version of the hit archery combat game. Inspired by classics from the golden age of couch multiplayer, it’s a 4-player local party game centering around hilarious, intense versus matches. The core mechanics are simple and accessible, but hard to master and combat is fierce. Loot treasure chests for game-changing power-ups, master the art of catching arrows out of the air, or descend on your foes and stomp them into submission. TowerFall is best played competitively with friends, cross-legged on the floor within punching distance of each other.

Again, a great game. Short, but really fun. The problem is, it’s almost number one on the list of Indie Games that will be recommended to you if you ask about Local multiplayer games. If you play Couch Co-op at all, you’ve probably bought it already. It’s also, as mentioned above, pretty short and won’t keep you busy for long.

Legend of Grimrock II

Legend of Grimrock - Humble Monthly Bundle

Legend of Grimrock 2 is a dungeon crawling role playing game with a modern execution but an oldschool heart. A group of four prisoners have shipwrecked on the secluded Isle of Nex. The island is filled with ancient crumbled ruins, mysterious shrines and a vast underground network of dungeons and mines. If the prisoners wish to make it out alive, they have to overcome the challenges devised by the ominous mastermind of the island.

As a game that was recently released this is probably one of the best included in this bundle, simply because the likelihood of owning it is pretty low. It also means the price has not dipped as low as some of the other games in this bundle, though it was still available at a low price as little as two days ago.

While this bundle is worth more than the price paid (more than double) when going by the historical low price, I just don’t feel it’s worth it. The point could be made that at current price of the games, this bundle is a steal. Yet I would argue that as PC gamers we are frugal, if a little spoiled and that most people consider the historical low in their decision to buy a game. Thus, I’d rather save the $12 and buy one small Indie game I like. Out of a bundle of seven games, I already own four of them and for me it just wasn’t worth the money.

Overall Rating – One LORNA out of Five.

Bobble bobble   From the Dark World   From the Dark World   From the Dark World   From the Dark World

If this bundle was for console, we’d be freaking out right now. But Humble knows their market, they’ve spent months selling to us, after all. PC gaming is a different brand. Titles are available for low prices and great deals year through, we’ve come to expect more and we’re not willing to settle for less unless it’s a trusted brand who’s won us over. Two include two games that they previously bundled is in my mind a travesty. But hoping to pull the wool over our eyes with Saints Row IV is unforgiveable.

Even though I plan to stay subscribed for one more month out of sheer curiosity and some sort of christmas inspired hope…I’m not sure the Humble Monthly Bundle can redeem itself. They needed to pull something amazing out to get our continuing support and in that task, Humble Monthly Bundle utterly failed.
