Lorna Loves: ‘I*Light Organic Advanced Brightening & Line Smoothing Eye Treatment’ by Sweetsations Therapy.

As a product tester I occasionally receive products at a discount in exchange for an impartial, unbiased review. Mostly, these don’t require me to post to my blog and that’s how I like it. Occasionally I will take on one that requires a post here, but it always leaves me a little nervous.

What if I don’t like it? Well, nervous or no, I consider it a point of pride to be totally honest when testing and reviewing a product. So the good news is, with me, you know what you’re getting.

Bioré baking soda Loquacious Lorna review

These two new facial products from popular brand Bioré are part of their ‘Don’t be Dirty’ skincare  line. While I have you here, let me just point out how much I hate that slogan. Don’t sell me a product by telling me I’m dirty without it. It’s my dirt and I might like it, thank you very much.

How to get free stuff on the internet Part 1

Product testing free internet Loquacious Lorna
Subtitle: Frugal and moneymaking advice for cheap losers like me

Hey don’t take offence, I’m a cheap loser too! Ask any Scottish person and they’ll tell you, we have a well deserved reputation for being frugal (thrifty, skinflints, cheapskites). Whatever you want to call it, I see it as a badge of pride. Recently, during a time off work for health reasons, I learned a lot more about the frugal lifestyle than even I had previously known. Several friends were curious about how I maintained my luxurious lifestyle.

One of those way is product testing, so I decided to share that knowledge with you.

Keep in mind, that what works for me isn’t going to be the same for everybody. For a start, I’m in Canada, Quebec specifically, so I have a lot less options than most Canadians (outside Quebec) or Americans as many companies don’t take time to implement French or adhere to special laws for my province or country. So once you get into it, you might find some amazing sites or recommendations that I don’t list here! Feel free to drop ’em in the comments. Some people work and have less time, that’s ok, try things out and find what you have the time and the brain for, you might surprise yourself with how much money you save.

At the bottom of the article I’m also gonna be throwing down some handy tips to remember when getting your save on through the interwebs.

This week we’re going to be talking about Product Testing Opportunities! So, without further ado, here it is (in order of preference):

Covergirl Outlast Stay Fabulous 3 in 1 Foundation Review & Rate (BzzAgent)

Thanks to Bzzagent I had the chance to try a new foundation from Covergirl Outlast and really, I needed it. We all know we’re supposed to dispose of our makeup after a certain amount of time, but up until this year I only wore makeup about once a year and it seemed a waste, so my current foundation is pretty old.

Humble Monthly Bundle – November 2015 – Reveal and Rate

Humble Monthly Bundle – Did it deliver?

Humble Monthly Bundle is a new monthly service from awesome cheap game distributor Humble Bundle that features a selection of mystery games for a $12.99 price tag. Like many other gamers I was sceptical. Having been a buyer of the other Humble Bundles for under a year, I already had a Steam backlog of around four hundred games and wasn’t sure Humble could deliver on their promises of a good monthly bundle that I would like.

I was drawn in by the offer of a AAA game as I actually don’t have very many top tier titles on the PC yet and figured that Humble would give the best games in the first two months to draw Gamers in. Click on the cut to see if Humble Bundle was able to deliver or if it fell flat as predicted. Continue reading Humble Monthly Bundle – November 2015 – Reveal and Rate

Steam Gems – Coin Crypt Featurette

Steam Gems – Coin Crypt

This time I’m offering up a review on a Steam Gem from my own personal list of over 400 games. This Indie Title had me coming back again and again. It has ‘Very Positive’ Steam Reviews, but despite this not a lot of Gamers I talk to have heard of it.

Coin Crypt Loquacious Lorna Banner
Have you ever had the sneaking suspicious that your Grandma may be hiding something? If you did I’ve got something a heck of a lot more likely to amuse you than that terrible new M. Night Shyamalan movie. Coin Crypt is described as a rogue-lite deckbuilder, but don’t let that description fool you. What Coin Crypt actually is, is a monster in disguise; an unexpected, addictive little git that will worm it’s way into your heart and leave you wanting more. The Grandma? Well, we’ll get to that. As for Mr Shyamalan, I have only one one thing to say to that guy.

Tyra Rooting for you Loquacious Lorna
Never forget.

Arcade Block October 2015 Reveal.

Arcade Block

Arcade Block is a monthly subscription box that is run by Nerd Block costing $19.95 (US) a month (plus shipping) which delivers assorted geekery and fandom goodies to its subscribers. From Nerd Block you can also subscribe to many other themed boxes, including Horror Block and Comic Block. I actually wasn’t expecting to receive anything. Having signed up for their Welcome Box and being disappointed (items from the welcome box are currently for sale on my Ebay, linked to the left) I had cancelled, but I guess it didn’t take in time. Thankfully, because the first item I reveal below the cut, blew my mind!

Loot Crate Reveal – October 2015 – Time.

Loot Crate is a monthly subscription box costing $19.95 (US) a month which delivers assorted geekery and fandom goodies to its subscribers. It comes with an optional add-on of Lvl Up; giving further accessories for a separate payment. I’m currently not subscribed to Level Up, but that could change at any moment! Each month Loot Crate comes with a different theme. October’s theme is Time. I was reasonably interested in the Time theme, though I suspected there would be nothing that would be a must have item for me. Loot Crate heavily hinted at items from Back to the Future, Doctor Who and Bill and Ted; none of which are my ‘fandom’ though I know of all of them quite well. So what exactly was contained in October’s crate?

Lorna Loves – Meet Matt(e) Hughes Long-Lasting Liquid lipstick by theBalm cosmetics.

Meet Matt(e) Hughes
Matt Hughes likes milkshakes and pretty shades of pink.

Now at this point you probably have some questions, like who exactly is Matt Hughes and why is this lipstick named after him or why is this strange lady telling me about this stuff? Well if you’re on my blog I can presume you already know the answer to question two, but just for kicks and giggles, here it is. Lorna Loves is going to be an ongoing segment for me to rant about products that I adore. They must be rated four or five Lornas to qualify. Every review and article featured on my website will be my own, honest, unforced opinion and if the product was sent to me for free in exchange for a review I will always mention it in the article. Furthermore, I’ll never mislead you, even if I was given a complimentary product, all opinions are my own and will remain so; ain’t nobody got time to be a corporate puppet, foo’.

Pro Tip: If you prefer to skip straight to the rating and a handy list of pros and cons of the product, go to the bottom of the article!

Steam Link Review

Steam Link Review – Think Before you Link

Let me start by saying that I have heard NOTHING but glorious praise for the Steam Link. The description of the Steam Link is like your wildest dream come true (if you’re a tame dreamer like me). The ability to play all your amazing games right from the sofa on a big TV screen in High Def with no lag! What the Steam link allows is for you to use it to stream the image from your computer and in conjunction with the new Steam controllers, play Steam games directly from the comfort of your living room. All the shiny graphics of your amazing PC rig (mine was built to play Dragon Age Inqusition on Highest settings, but had to be lowered for The Witcher 3) with the comfort of your sofa with your cat in your lap.

Steam Link - So shiny.
The Steam Link allows players to stream their PC gaming onto their television.

My experience with Steam Link was more like an irritating nightmare come true. We tried playing around with the settings as recomended by a quick googling, but to no avail. No matter what we change, the Steam Link was too laggy to allow any kind of action game to be played. Tostada fell to her death in Guacamelee again and again as the delays increased and decreased in time with my defeated roars. Some more quick googling told me that the Steam link would run lag free with a connection speed of 30mbps or more. Now listen here, Valve, I doubt Canada is getting Google Fiber anytime soon, so if you just wanna go ahead and release a device that actually works for the normal human gamer, that’d be great. Steam Controller Review

Steam Controller Review – Local Co-op not so hot

When it works, the Steam controller is a marvel. The box and packaging are beautiful, easily feeling as special and exciting as any new Apple product. A cute cardboard wraparound showed the details of the inside of the controllers, something I can only enjoy visually but that might actually prove useful to the more tech-savvy amongst us. The setup was quick and painless and each game had settings to customise the experience and make everything how you want it. With any new technology there’s going to be a learning curve and as someone with no dexterity and bad memory I experience this even switching from one console to another. The Steam controller was no exception.

Steam controller
The Steam controller features two ‘Haptic’ feedback mouse control pads to allow users to emulate keyboard and mouse controls.

One issue I noticed was that the gamepad’s B button was closer to where the Xbox 360 controller’s A button was, making me constantly press the B button under the assumption that it was in fact the A button. In time, I’m sure I’ll adjust to that however and it’s hardly Valve’s fault. I might prefer the haptic gamepad and the buttons switch places, but I’m sure many configurations were tested and this was found to be the smartest. The haptic pad itself gave feedback as intended and was just as smooth and easy to use as described by early reviewers. I absolutely loved the addition of the easily clickable buttons on the underside of the hand grips and the positioning and ease of use of the triggers. As someone who’d experienced finger strain from PS3 controller triggers in the past, I felt Steam’s version to be a lot more gentle on the old digits. Continue reading Steam Controller Review
